Jeremiah I am a 12 year old player who is always told that I am amazing, my dream is too make it all the way to the pros. I am on a high  nationally ranked travel ball team and can play any position. The only bad thing is I don’t have confidence and I don’t have a good arm. Are there any tips you can give me to help not only my arm but also my fielding and confidence.   _______________________________________________________...

First Year Struggles

Posted on September 20, 2013

Hello, My son is starting little league (after a few years of T-ball) and I am racking my brain during his first year struggles -- which have been hard on him. He's always held a hockey stick left-handed (as I played lefty too), so I had him in T-ball hold the bat/hit left-handed too and did pretty well hitting this way (a good, contact hitter). But unfortunately, he looks woefully over matched hitting lefty in little league. Admittedly, he's ...

Set Up

Posted on September 20, 2013

Coach, I am coaching a lower division t-ball team that consists of 4 and 5 yr olds, and one 6 yr old.  Most of the teams consist of 9 players.  The league has decided that since my team has 11 players, they have placed us in the upper division.  The ages in the upper division are 5 and 6. You would think it would make us better, but it has made it harder to get them motivated.  Some have never played before.  We can’t change ...

Weakness

Posted on September 20, 2013

Hello, my name is Samuel Tagle and I coach at the high school level. I’ve been curious to know what exactly what weaknesses does a coach/pitcher look for in opposing batters.  If you explain to me.  I feel kinda weird asking this but I really want to get better at assessing the batter so I can be an asset to my team and players. I appreciate the time and hope you respond soon. Thanks again.   ______________________________...

Bat Weight

Posted on August 30, 2013

I have a son that is 9 years of age. I'm looking to purchase him a new bat. He is a good size for his age. I have heard from different coaches over the past years that the lighter the bat the better. What size would you recommend? Coach Swift answers: I would recommend that you do the following test with a bat at a sporting goods store. Have your son take his lead hand (if he's a right-handed batter that would be his left hand) and hold the ...

Two Seam

Posted on August 30, 2013

I am a right-handed, 12 year-old pitcher. I am trying to get a 2-seamer with good movement into a right-handed hitter. Please give me any tips or suggestions on how to get more "in" movement. Coach Swift answers: This is a relatively difficult question to answer because I don't know how strong your arm is or your arm speed. But I can tell you that the way to do it correctly is by changing your grip and arm speed versus trying any type of ...

Pitching Fear

Posted on August 30, 2013

What is the main reason kids are afraid to be a pitcher? Is it being the main focus in front of the crowd? Or is it being afraid of throwing balls and strikes with an umpire and worrying about hitting batters? Coach Swift answers: The simple answer is to say you're 100% right with all three causes. Every individual has their own fear of failure and when you put a kid on the pitching mound you increase that fear of failure every time he ...

Hitting Slump

Posted on August 30, 2013

I'm in a hitting slump right now and it's more mental then my swing. I'm not sure what to do. Before game time I'm loosy goosy and ready to play. But once I hit the field I freeze up and I don't know why. Any suggestions? Coach Swift answers: You are getting to the plate and thinking too much while at bat. Leave most of your thinking in the on-deck circle. Before you step to the plate, you should be aware of certain game situations. Think ...

Youth Stations

Posted on August 30, 2013

I run a 10 week baseball camp every year for our local baseball organization. This year we have added a very young group (age 6-7) and I am struggling to keep their interest. The area of most concern is the hitting station. Can you suggest games and/or drills that can be used for this age group? Coach Swift answers: You are certainly correct in that these little guys are extremely busy and have very short attention spans. When I coached and ...

Getting Back Into Shape

Posted on August 30, 2013

I need to get back into baseball shape. What can I do?   Coach Swift answers: I would suggest that you do exactly what you would normally do to get back into shape for any activity. Start out with a walking/running program, a stretching exercises program (something that I think is exceptionally important for baseball), and some type of weight program. This will take care of your general overall body fitness. You should begin a ...
