Coach Hill was the first coach to use Wind WeightedŽ Baseball Tarps. Before he got them, "When it started raining during a game, about ten students and players would install tarps, some spreading and standing on the edges to keep wind from blowing them up. Others would run to get sandbags. The entire process took almost 10 minutes."
Coach Hill now uses a 20' mound cover and a 30' home base cover. He also uses Wind Weighted Installers to store, move, and install his tarps. Coach Wiggs formerly used "most of the team to cover the mound and home plate if there was no lightening with the rain. Some stood on the edges while others would get the stakes and pound them into the ground. It took about five minutes to finish the job." He noted that "heavy wind would occasionally rip the tarp's grommet right out of the tarp." Wind WeightedŽ Tarp Durability - A True Story
2004 was the "Year of Hurricanes" in Florida, with four major storms hitting the state in just two months. One hurricane crossed Florida, headed up the Atlantic Coast, and blew its way across Georgia. The Atlanta area experienced storm winds up to 65 mph, and Collins Hill High School in the suburb town of Suwanee took a direct hit.
Paul Pierce, head baseball coach at Collins Hill, tells the story best:
"Looking at our baseball facility the morning after the storm was a shock. All our signs were blown away. Some of our outfield fence was bent over, and the windscreen was torn off the fences. A big pile of metal debris behind the field blew away, and we never saw it again. Our field was a mess.
Then I noticed that our new Wind Weighted Baseball Tarp was still on the mound. Though hard to believe, it hadn't moved an inch during the storm.
